with the kind support of Mondriaanfonds

For some time now, as an artist, I have been striving for a transitive space, an open area where potential connections are made between various disciplines, objects, units of time, and ideas.

I have studied the shifts in positions concerning abstraction and figuration, the sign and its meaning, and the idea and its visual translation. To me, these shifts and the place and moment within which they occur represent a political situation.

And somewhere in or around that, I suspect there is an idea of space or a viewpoint that might be worthwhile.

Media in the broadest sense of the word holds my interest. I try to pose questions about how our lives are historically interpreted and trapped in a predetermined web of signs and meanings.

'The extent to which a medium — be it Prozac, cocaine, the automobile, or the mobile phone — is used is seldom the result of deliberate individual choice; rather, it is shaped by situationally induced routines. This implies that the medium can, in a passive sense, present itself as an object of a certain scale, while at the same time, in an active sense, it is normative.'

Media Sails, 2023

Erwin Thomasse invited me to make this exhibition in het Van Abbehuis in Eindhoven.

To be able to tell a bit about the work I wrote the following text for Erwin and his compagnon.

The inclusion of a bed and the phrase ‘make yourself a home’ printed on the back of the hand-out is a response to redefine not only the concept of a house but also specifically the Van Abbehuis. The house’s primary purpose is to offer shelter and serve as a gathering place. Eventually, it may also evolve into a home. This perspective contrasts with the notion of looking towards distant horizons. The Van Abbehuis, having transitioned from a house to an office and now returning to its original purpose as a house, undergoes a recontextualization of its attributes. In this context, the concepts of 'house' and the imagery of a 'bed' function as vessels or mediums that signify the potential for reception and community.

Pulcinella, a character from the Italian theatrical tradition of commedia dell’arte, continually confronts villains and mischief. Pulcinella takes various forms, can be portrayed as male or female, and is imaginative and highly creative. A precursor to the traditional Dutch puppet character Jan Klaasen, Pulcinella engages the audience through his or her reflections and actions. The ship sailing in the fog appears as a mere shadow of its true form, uncertain of its intended path. Consequently, its role as a ‘vessel of discovery’ or medium remains stagnant, seemingly adrift and directionless. The third and final painting in the series portrays a flat sea, with the ship having made minimal headway against the relentless current.

The name Bikini inherently conveys an aura of exoticism, but what does that imply? Where does this notion of the exotic lead us, and how does it manifest itself upon arrival? Furthermore, how does it materialise within one’s context upon returning? The act of displaying and sharing (nowadays predominantly through online platforms) this consciously lived experience accentuates an incongruity: the lack of alignment between the actual experience on the one hand and the portrayal of that experience on the other.

The term ‘front-wheel drive’ distinguishes itself from variants such as ‘rear-wheel drive’ and ‘four-wheel drive’. It does so with a certain sense of expectation or presumption because it offers benefits such as enhanced handling and a more compact car design. However, drawbacks include a wide turning radius, increased weight on the front of the car, and limited power transfer to the road surface. My concern is the perceived advantages or preference for one variant over the others. The image featuring two green circles fails to immediately clarify which represents the front wheel and, consequently, the rear wheel. The vehicle, or medium, attempts to convey a message within a specific context. Beyond the title, this context aligns with contemporary art, potentially drawing parallels with abstraction or modernism. Are we looking in the right direction? When we cast our gaze to the left, are we looking forward? What messages does the medium convey, and are we willing to engage in interpretation and negotiation?
